And
Then There Was The Back Row…
One of the big draws of ROCstock are the big motors flown. Over
the past winter rocketeers have been quietly snagging new M motors
almost as fast as they could be made by Aerotech, not to mention
rounding up the king size nitrous tanks for hybrid M’s. In all,
13 rockets flew on M’s.

Larry Taylor,
who got his Level 3 on a “Sidewinder” last
winter, put up a nicely detailed and scratch built “Bomarc Missile” on
a M1939. It spiraled lazily up into high altitude waiver territory,
and came back unscathed. |

|
| Also
flying M1939’s were Jack Garibaldi and
the team of Andy Woerner and Steve Trainor. Both flew Polecat
Aerospace Nike Smokes. Jack Garibaldi christened
his “In
Debt” (now
why would you name a rocket that?…) and it had an awe-inspiring if otherwise
uneventful flight; much better than his earlier L attempt. |

The flight
of the other Nike Smoke really got
the crowds attention. The drogue charge went off at apogee, but failed
to produce a drogue. This caused some concern since the rocket appeared
to want to return home – to the What’sUp Hobbies tent. Andy never
blinked. The missile entered a flat spin on the way down and dutifully
deployed it’s main chute at 500’. It drifted to earth behind the flight
line. Rumors that it was supposed to do this have gone unverified. |
